Dear Winnie

I am sorry I could not get this small present in time for your birthday. I hope mother and all and you had a good time at Weston on Thursday. Wishing many happy returns of the day

Some context. Arthur wrote this 4 days before war broke out. They were moved out and shipped to France on August 16th. They would have been amongst the first to engage the enemy on the 22nd August. The Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria had been assassinated on the 28th June and I wonder whether at this stage he knew war was inevitable.
